Purchased Databases (CC Students and Employees Only)

The following periodical databases (indexing newspapers, magazines, and journals) may be used by Centralia College students, faculty, and staff 24 hrs. per day, from both on- and off-campus Internet-connected computers.

CQ Researcher Online (CC Students and Employees Only)
This online periodical provides background information and analysis of social issues appropriate for research papers. Library also subscribes to the paper edition that is published on a weekly basis.

Ebsco Academic Search Premier (CC Students and Employees Only)
Academic Search Premier contains full-text articles for approximately 4,600 periodicals. Covers topics including: literature, controversial issues, business, health & medicine, psychology, sociology, law, religion, philosophy, media studies, and many more.

Ebsco GreenFILE (CC Students and Employees Only)
The resources contained in GreenFILE offer perspectives on environmental issues as they pertain to disciplines including law, natural sciences, engineering, urban planning, agriculture, sociology, and political science. GreenFILE offers citations (and some full-text versions) for publications in a wide variety of formats.

Gale: All Databases (CC Students and Employees Only)
Gale provides access to several reference databases, including the following periodical databases:

  • Health Reference Center Academic (CC Students and Employees Only)
    Access to health, fitness and medical periodicals plus health-related reference books and pamphlets.

  • History Resource Center: United States (CC Students and Employees Only)
    Information from history periodicals and reference books as well as primary source documents.

     

  • Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center (CC Students and Employees Only)
    This is an excellent starting point for students who wish to examine current topics affecting American society.  Included are viewpoint essays, reference book entries, and journal and magazine articles.


ProQuest: All Databases (CC Students and Employees Only)
Note: The ProQuest set of databases is subsidized by funds received through the Washington State Library.
ProQuest provides access to the following periodical databases, which can be searched individually:

  • Teacher Journals (CC Students and Employees Only)
    Search selected professional educators' titles covering current issues in education.
  • Research Library (CC Students and Employees Only)
    The full-text of approximatley 1,500 periodicals offering coverage of a broad range of subjects including arts, business, children, education, general interest, health, humanities, international, law, military, multicultural, psychology, sciences, social sciences, and women's interests.
  • Nursing and Allied Health Source (CC Students and Employees Only)
    Information from leading nursing and related publications, with full-text dating back to 1988. Designed to meet the needs of researchers at health-care facilities as well as students enrolled in nursing programs.
  • National Newspapers & Washington Newsstand (CC Students and Employees Only)
    National Newspapers offers the full-text of the following newspapers: Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post. Washington Newsstand includes full-text coverage of the Puget Sound Business Journal and several major daily Washington newspapers including those of Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane, and Vancouver.
  • Ethnic NewsWatch (CC Students and Employees Only)
    An interdisciplinary, bilingual (English and Spanish) and comprehensive full text database of newspapers, magazines, and journals from ethinic, minority, and native presses. This current database begins its coverage in 1990.
  • eLibrary (CC Students and Employees Only)
    eLibrary provides access to selected magazine and newspaper articles, pictures, maps, and TV/Radio transcripts, and reference sources.
  • Alt-Press Watch (CC Students and Employees Only)
    A full text database comprised of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the alternative and independent press.
  • ABI-Inform Trade & Industry (CC Students and Employees Only)
    Search more than 750 business periodicals and newsletters with a trade or industry focus. Includes periodicals related to the field of energy and power plant operations. Provides users with the latest industry news, product and competitive information, marketing trends, and a wide variety of other topics. Contains publications on every major industry, including finance, insurance, transportation, construction, and many more.

Periodical Databases Available From The Public Library

The Timberland Regional Library System makes available several periodical databases. You will need a public library card to access these databases. In addition to the public library version of the Proquest databases, the library also offers access to:

  • Gale's Resource Centers for Business & Company and Health & Wellness Information
  • InfoTrac Onefile

Free Web Periodical Databases

The following databases are found on the Web and allow free access. Many of them index periodicals as well as conference papers, book, research bulletins, etc. All offer citations; some offer full-text of articles for free while others charge for document delivery. Many of the databases are made available by federal or state agencies.

Quick tip: Search these databases in conjunction with the library's Periodical Holdings List. The library may own the full-text of articles for which these databases provide only the citations.

Education

ERIC
Description: An index of education-related resources including journals, books, papers, and other publications. Citations and digests only.

Environment

AGRICOLA
Description: AGRICultural OnLine Access offers the Journal Article Citation Index (1979 to present) which indexes journal articles, conference proceedings and other serials.

Medicine

PubMed
Description: PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, provides access to over 12 million MEDLINE citations back to the mid-1960's and additional life science journals. A few citations have links to full-text articles and documents.

MedlinePlus
Description: Consumer health information from the National Library of Medicine.

Science

Scirus
Description: Indexes both journals and Web resource.

Newspapers & Magazines

Regional News Index (Washington State)
Description: The following publications are SELECTIVELY indexed: Olympian ( indexed articles are current within 48 hours of publication), Columbia Magazine, Eastside Week, Seattle Magazine, Seattle Weekly, Washington CEO, and Washington Magazine. Coverage begins in 1993.

Oregon Index (Oregon State)
Description: Index to many of Oregon's newspapers. Earliest date of coverage is 1985.

Find Articles
Description: Archive of free articles from magazines and journals dating from 1998 to present.

Ingenta
Description: Index only of certain academic and professional periodicals. Table of contents may be viewed.

MagPortal
Description: Archive of free magazine and journal articles dating from 1999 to present.

U.S. News Archives on the Web
Description: These pages provide links to United States news archives available on the Web.

Non-U.S. News Archives on the Web
Description: These pages provide links to non-United States newspaper archives available on the Web.
